About buttons

You can create a button in the button editor. A button created in the button editor can have up to four state, such as up, over, down, and over while down.
A button created in the button editor has many advantage such as:
Is a special type of symbol, meaning you can drag instances of it from the library into your document. A button is encapsulated, meaning by dragging the button in the document you move all of the information associated with it. It is easy to edit, you just double click on it in the library and then change it in the button editor. Since a button is a symbol it has a registration point. The registration point is the center point that helps to align text and other different button state.

Creating a button
1. Choose insert > new button which opens the button editor (The button editor always opens to the up state tab).
2. In the work area of the button editor, you can use the drawing tools to create your button or you can import or drag and drop a graphic into the button editor which is going to be placed as button's up state. You can also add text to your button by using the text tool. The image below shows the button editor in the up state.

3. Next click on the over tab. You can check the onion skinning box which can help you visually align each button state graphic or you can place another image or graphic for your over state, or you can just click on the Click Copy Up Graphic button to paste a copy of your up state graphic into the over state, and then edit it to change its appearance. The image below shows the button editor in the over state.

4. As mentioned above you can click on the copy over graphic button to get a copy of the over state for the down state and then change it and the same for over while down state.
5. The active area of a button is what triggers the rollover when the pointer is moved over it in a web browser. If you choose to use set active area automatically option, Fireworks automatically creates a slice large enough to enclose all the state, if you want to change this area you have to turn off the set active area automatically.
6. You can add a URL to your button using the link wizard, you just click on the active area tab in your button editor. The active area appears, containing the slice, as shown below.

7. Next, click on the link wizard button to attach a URL, alt tag, and even if you want to put a specific message to display in the browser window status bar to the rollover, as shown below.

8. After, you close the button editor, your button appears in the library and an instance of the button in your document. Remember that when you resize or move the button as a unit, all the states and the active area are going to be moved or resized. The image below shows the button in the library and an instance of the button in your document.
